Auteur filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro brings his dreamlike and fantastical style to this story about a mute custodian who begins a relationship with an underwater creature in the 1950s. The unique and challenging romance that blooms between the two leads is wonderfully acted by Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones. And in addition, the film also features across the board great performances from some of the best character actors working – Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Richard Jenkins to name a few. Deeply moving and romantic, this film has a good deal more to say about love and sex in a single frame than all of the Fifty Shades of Grey movies combined.
