This movie made quite a splash among critics as well as angsty teenagers when it was released in 2001. It involves a teenager named Donnie Darko, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who is visited by visions of a tall, demonic bunny rabbit who tells him that the world will end in 28 days. Set in 1988, one of the film’s major strengths is its great 80s score, with songs like Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division and The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen—a score that gets a little butchered in the Director’s Cut. Actually, a note on that—do not watch the Director’s Cut. It’s a step backward from a movie that remains trippy but palatable—an enduring cult classic.
