Based on the worldwide bestselling series of the same name by author Veronica Roth, this movie paired star Shailene Woodley with not one but two of her previous onscreen boyfriends, Miles Teller of The Spectacular Now and Ansel Elgort of The Fault in Our Stars. While the young stars have undeniable chemistry with each other, it does not save this YA adventure from dismal, PG-13 mediocrity. It tries its best to capture the violence and excitement of The Hunger Games, but the glacial pacing and paper-thin characters keep it from even coming close. But if you like YA film adaptations, there’s some stuff to like here—particularly Miles’s signature douchebaggery and Theo James’s sulky smoulder.
